What is a Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty or nose job is a surgical procedure done to improve the appearance of the nose. It is one of the most common facial plastic surgery procedures that people seek. Patient can seek a rhinoplasty for numerous reasons including a large nose, a large hump, a droopy tip, reshaping the size of the nostrils and many more! It is one of the most complicated surgeries plastic surgeons perform due to the 3 dimensional shape of the nose and the fact that most of the surgery is done in millimeters. Patients who also have difficulty breathing will require a septo-rhinoplasty where work is done to the nasal septum, internal valve or inferior turbinates to enhance nasal airflow. Ultimately this is the most important function of the nose. Dr Rayess has a subtle approach to rhinoplasty preserving your own native structure whenever possible and ensuring that nasal airflow is never compromised.
Am I a good candidate for a rhinoplasty?
Once you arrive to the clinic we will take pictures of your nose and face from multiple angles. During your consultation Dr Rayess will ask you for your top 3 concerns about your nose. That will allow us to have a realistic discussion of what can be achieved based on your anatomy and skin thickness. Dr Rayess aims to give you a natural look with subtle changes to your nose preserving your ethnicity and overall harmony of your facial features. What is the recovery from a nose job?
After your rhinoplasty surgery, Dr Rayess will typically see you the following day to make sure everything is healing well. You will typically have a cast on your nasal bones and splints inside your nose. These will come off 6-7 days after your surgery. During this time it will be difficult for you to breathe from your nose. For the first 2-3 days after the surgery your nose may drip blood and that is so to be expected.
Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty
Dr Rayess utilizes the rhinoplasty approach that he believes will provide his patients with the best results. The main difference between open and closed rhinoplasty is a 5-7mm incision along the columella that almost always heals nicely in patients of all skin tones. The open rhinoplasty approach allows better visualization of the structures of the nose especially in patients who are undergoing revision surgery.
Frequently asked questions about Rhinoplasty
What is the best age for a rhinoplasty?
Most rhinoplasty patients are between 16-40 years old. Rhinoplasty is rarely performed in patients younger than 16 because it is important to ensure that the patient has completed growing and hit puberty. Patients older than 50 may also elect to have a rhinoplasty to help rotate a droopy nose and take care of other aging changes to the nose.
What is the perfect nose?
There is no ideal standards for a perfect nose. The ideal nose for each patient is dependent on numerous factors, their ethnicity, their skin type, whether they have had previous trauma or surgeries to the nose, the strength of their cartilage. These are all factors that play into the ultimate outcome of a rhinoplasty. Therefore, what is ideal on one patient may not be for someone else. That is why it is important to see a facial plastic surgery specialist who has extensive experience with nasal surgery, and will work with your individual anatomic features to help give you the best results.
How painful is a rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty is not a very painful surgery. Most patients will go home with some pain medication but will rarely use the full amount prescribed.
How long does a rhinoplasty last?
Most rhinoplasties are permanent. There is always a chance that a revision rhinoplasty may be needed. On average about 10% of patients may require a revision rhinoplasty. Typically patients need to wait at least a year following their last surgery to determine if a revision is necessary.
What is a non Surgical or liquid rhinoplasty?
A non surgical rhinoplasty commonly uses fillers to help camouflage certain nasal defects such as a hump and minor irregularities. The placement of the filler is temporary and will have to be repeated. It can be done in an office setting in a short period of time. This procedure will actually make the nose larger as you are adding material to it. Patients who undergo this procedure need to see an expert as there is a risk of injecting blood vessels that can cause damage.
