A surgical lip lift is a procedure designed to increase the show of the red lip. Older patients can complain of an elongated white lip and the thin red lip. How is a lip lift performed?

The surgery is performed under local anesthesia with oral sedation depending on the patient. The incision is made right at the junction of the lip and the nose it is in the shape of a bullhorn, with curves designed to flow along the curves of the nose. The incision is not in the nose.

The amount of skin to be removed is carefully measured and marked. Deep and superficial sutures are then use to close the wound. The sutures come out at 5-7 days.  It can take up to three months for the incision to completely heal and during this time it may become thicker and require adjunctive treatments such as C02 laser or kenalog injections.
