Torn earlobes are commonly caused by long term usage of large earrings or trauma to the ear while the earring is in place. Long term wearing of heavy earrings can cause the slit to widen and it will eventually tear through the ear lobe. As the slit enlarges it will become harder to secure earrings to your ear lobes. This can be bothersome to patients and prevent them from wearing jewelry in their ears. Trauma to the earlobes is also a common cause of torn earlobes and can be caused while playing sports or playing with children.
Will the earlobe tear heal without surgery?
Usually not. Once the slit has enlarged it will usually epithelialize, the same is true once the earlobe is torn. In these situations you need to remove the epithelium to allow the edges to heal to each other.

What is the recovery like for torn earlobes?
The recovery is simple. There is minimal discomfort. You will need to clean the incision line with peroxide on a q tip and place ointment over the incision lines. Avoid using a blow dryer until the incision gains sensation to avoid accidental burning of the ear lobes. The sutures will be removed in the office in 5-7 days.
