One of the most common reason patients visit plastic surgeons is to enhance the appearance of their neck and get rid of a double chin. Excess fat can accumulate in the area under the chin in patients of all ages. In addition, as we age the skin in the neck can get looser and bands can develop. Dr Rayess offers enhanced techniques to help rejuvenate the neck including using liposuction and platysmaplasty.
Am I a Candidate for chin liposuction?
In general if you have excess fat in the area under your chin creating a double chin you are a candidate for this procedure. The fat under the chin and in the neck can be stubborn and hard to lose even if you are in good shape. Removing this fat can also help give you a nice jawline contour. During your appointment with Dr Rayess he will also evaluate the skin laxity and the rest of your neck to determine the most appropriate procedure for you. In patients who are under 45 the skin has good elasticity and the skin will contract nicely over the area that is suctioned.
How is chin liposuction performed?
Chin liposuction is performed under local anesthesia. Most patients don’t require any IV sedation. Oral sedation can be used for patients . We use numbing medication, and inject it into the area that will be treated. Dr Rayess will then use liposuction cannulas of the appropriate size to contour the area. You will have an incision under your chin and possibly around your ears depending on the situation. The overall time for the procedure is about 45 minutes for neck liposuction alone. If more work is needed it can go to between one hour to 1.5 hours.
What is the recovery?
Most patients can go back to their normal routine their next day. With our technique there is minimal bruising and pain associated with this procedure. You will have to wear a chin strap for one week to compress the area that was suctioned.
What about non surgical options for neck fullness or double chin?
There are numerous non-surgical options to get rid of neck fat including Kybella and Coolsculpting. Kybella is a bile acid that is injected into the areas of excess fat and melts it. Patients usually require 2-3 treatments of Kybella spaced over time. Kybella also cannot be used around the jawline because it may paralyze the nerve that controls your lip. Coolsculpting freezes the fat cells and relies on your body to eliminate them and require multiple treatments. Chin liposcution is usually a one time treatment and sucks out the fat so that it is removed from your body.
